Stablehand killed in crash with a car


A stablehand employed by Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Danny O’Brien has died while riding a horse after being involved in a crash with a car in Victoria.

The man in his 30s died at the scene, while the horse and the driver of the car suffered minor injuries, police say.

The rider works as a stablehand for a local horse trainer.

The incident happened on Thirteenth Beach Road at Barwon Heads near Geelong on Monday morning.

Police have closed the road and detours are in place.

Worksafe is attending the scene and police will prepare a report for the coroner.

The fatality comes after two men and a woman were killed on Sunday when a tree fell on to their car in the Dandenong Ranges, east of Melbourne.

The large gumtree came down on the moving car and pushed it down a steep embankment.
