MARTIN KEOWN: No matter where he went, Jimmy Greaves scored goals and made people happy… now let’s see him finally honoured for his services to football

  • Even now, I remember Jimmy Greaves’ unique style as a person standing out
  • He brought joy to a lot of people, on and off the pitch, and had great one-liners
  • It’s outrageous that he was never officially recognised because he scored for fun
  • Now let’s see England’s forgotten man honoured for his services to football

A television programme does not run for seven years unless it’s a great success, and Saint and Greavsie on ITV was just that.

Between 1985 and 1992, England’s forgotten man would entertain the nation. Even now, I remember Jimmy Greaves’ unique style standing out.

He had a relaxed, laidback way, but he was capable of delivering a great one-liner. He brought joy to a lot of people, on and off the pitch.

When I consider he was never officially recognised, the word ‘outrageous’ springs to mind. Look at the record books and they tell you the guy was a phenomenon; a goal machine.

Watch footage on YouTube and you’ll see a range of strikes, from him silkily rounding goalkeepers to walloping that leather ball into the net.

No matter where he went, Greaves scored goals and made people happy (well, maybe not opposition defenders).

I was born six days before the 1966 World Cup final but we all know what happened. Greaves didn’t play, Sir Geoff Hurst did, and his hat-trick against West Germany turned England into world champions.

Under FIFA rules only players on the pitch received medals. It was 2009 when the rest of England’s squad finally got medals.

Now let’s see Greaves honoured for his services to football, too.
