Man Utd hero throws shade at Paul Pogba with dig about Paul Scholes

Manchester United star Paul Pogba has often been compared to club legend Paul Scholes throughout his time at Old Trafford. But Red Devils hero Norman Whiteside has thrown shade at the France international by suggesting Scholes would cost considerably more than the Frenchman in today’s market.

Manchester United legend Scholes left alongside Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, choosing to retire having initially given up on football once before.

And, in the years since, Pogba has often been compared to the England international.

The midfielder returned to Old Trafford from Juventus back in the summer of 2016, charged with the task of being Scholes’ replacement.

He cost United a sizeable amount, too, with the Red Devils paying then world-record £89million to secure his signature.

The France international hit the ground running upon returning, helping the club win the EFL Cup and Europa League under Jose Mourinho.

But, for the most part, Pogba has failed to live up to his blockbuster billing.

And Whiteside believes Scholes would be worth considerably more in today’s market, saying on Twitter: “Let’s clear thing’s up ????

“Pogba. £89M.

“Scholes. £189M.”

While Pogba has struggled for United, Scholes was always a consistent performer for the Red Devils.

He was a vital clog in the Ferguson machine, contributing both goals and assists to the cause.

Scholes won 11 Premier League titles between 1996 and 2013 at United.

And he also won two Champions League crowns, as well as the FA Cup on three occasions.

Scholes and Pogba were briefly team-mates at Old Trafford, before the France international left for Juventus in 2012.

And, speaking last year, Nemanja Vidic revealed how Scholes would try and coax more from Pogba by treating him roughly in training.

“Paul was only 17 and already as physically strong as he is now, with a very good physique,” Vidic said.

“Paul Scholes would kick him and test him, just as he did when I arrived.

“Scholes was showing the will to win, showing that we were not friends kicking the ball about, but that we trained tough and strong, as if we were in matches.

“It was: ‘You kick me and I kick you’.

“We fought every day and didn’t need to switch on for a game because we were always switched on.”

Vidic said Scholes’ treatment of Pogba was typical of the players  he operated alongside for United.

“United had a lot of players like that, who were so competitive,” Vidic added.

“That meant we were better prepared, even more than some of the best teams, who had great players but not the same drive to win.

“We’d go to games in Europe, or to Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool and not fear anybody.”
