Man Utd chief Woodward tipped to sign Aubameyang and one other player to partner Fernandes

Manchester United have been backed to sign Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang by Gunners hero Paul Merson. The Arsenal striker has been tipped to leave the Emirates this summer. Aubameyang is out of contract at the end of next season, meaning Arsenal could be forced into cashing in on the Gabon international this summer to avoid losing him for free.

The 30-year-old, who is Arsenal’s top goalscorer this season, is wanted by United and Barcelona.

And Gunners hero Merson says Aubameyang would be the ideal signing for United this summer.

The Sky Sports pundit claims United could turn into challengers if they signed Aubameyang and Aston Villa star Jack Grealish.

He wrote in his Sky Sports column: “Aubameyang is what Manchester United are missing. He is a goal scorer and goal scorers are priceless.

“If you look at United and the way they played against Manchester City a couple of weeks ago, I thought they were very, very good.

“You looked at them and thought they have got a chance, especially if they could also get hold of a couple more players, especially a creative midfielder.

“You couldn’t help but be impressed with their performance and if they were to sign Aubameyang and they also got someone like a Jack Grealish, are they big players? They would be a major force, in my opinion.

“They are crying out for someone who is going to score them 20 to 25 goals, and that’s what Aubameyang can bring. He gets you 25 goals without even breaking sweat.

“Add a Grealish if they can get him and then you’ve got Bruno Fernandes as well playing in behind a striker, Manchester United will be a major force.”

A lot has been made of United’s transfer plans, with Red Devils hero Paul Ince claiming Ed Woodward needs to sign two strikers and a central midfielder.

“If they want to close the gap on Manchester City and Liverpool then they need a world class striker,” Ince said.

“They had the chance with Haaland, the young kid who went to Dortmund, that was sad really.

“He is a very, very good young player who can improve and you can’t let people like that slip through the net.

“That was disappointing that they couldn’t get him. They have got to have someone in who gets 20-25 goals a season.

“They need another midfield player for sure. We don’t know what happens with [Paul] Pogba if he stays or goes. That’s another saga that we will have to go through once the season finishes.

“They need two strikers, I know [Marcus] Rashford is coming back but he is only young. You can’t rely on him all the time.

“Martial, for me on his day, is brilliant but he doesn’t have enough of those days. Ighalo is the wrong end of 30. He has done well but you won’t pin your hat on him for the next four years.

“If you look at all the top teams, all the best teams have the best strikers. Their strikers have 20-25 goals in a bad season.

“Manchester United lost that in [Romelu] Lukaku. That’s got to be their main aim.”
