Liverpool are “very prominent” in the race to sign RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, says Bundesliga commentator Kevin Hatchard. Werner has long been linked with a move to Liverpool to join up with fellow German Jurgen Klopp at Anfield. The 23-year-old has now scored 13 league goals or more in his four seasons with Leipzig.
Bayern Munich have also been linked with a move for Werner in the past.
However, Hatchard says the reigning Bundesliga champions have now cooled their interest in him.
Hatchard believes Werner has improved drastically since Julian Nagelsmann became Leipzig boss last June.
And he thinks his release clause of around £50million (€60m) would be well worth paying for Liverpool, who he reckons will be at the front of the queue to sign him.

“[The release clause is] dependant on the situation Leipzig are in, so there are a few add-ons in there but yeah [£50m is] pretty much the figure,” Hatchard told talkSPORT.
“They’re talking about the top end of €60m.
“So for me for a player of his quality, for a player of his experience, you’ve got to bare in mind this is a guy who’s in his early to mid-20s, he’s played over 200 games in the Bundesliga.
“So he’s vastly experienced already, improving all the time, I think he’s really benefited from playing under Julian Nagelsmann.

- Philippe Coutinho has set ideal transfer example for Liverpool
“He played as an out-and-out striker for pretty much his whole career, Nagelsmann has said to him ‘Look, I think you can be much more dangerous playing from a deeper role’.
“So he’s been playing from almost an attacking midfielder [position] at times and kind of driving past defences using his pace.
“So he’s improving, I think he would do very well in the Premier League.
“He has said on numerous occasions that he thinks the Premier League is an exciting prospect.
- Dani Ceballos rejected Liverpool transfer to join Arsenal
“Some pretty reliable German media sources are saying that Liverpool are very much one of the clubs that want to sign him and he is keen.
“He was very strongly linked with Bayern for quite a long time, that now seems to have gone away.
“He didn’t push for that move to Bayern and Bayern seem to have lost interest.
“So I think Liverpool certainly would be very, very prominent in that race to sign him.”
Werner has won 29 caps for Germany since his debut in 2017, scoring 11 goals.
