Liverpool are set to pay an extra £4million to Southampton for the signing of Virgil van Dijk, reports have claimed. The Reds sealed a deal worth £75million over two years ago as they smashed their transfer record for the 28-year-old who has transformed their backline.

Yet according to Football Insider, the European champions still have part of the fee to pay.

The report claims that Liverpool made an initial payment of £70m but there was also some add-ons that would still need ironing out.

One of those involves a £4m payment when he reaches 150 Premier League appearances for the Reds.

Van Dijk has currently played 113, meaning he is slowly closing in on the landmark.

The former Saints man has been worth his weight in gold since his switch to Merseyside.

Liverpool have reached two Champions League finals, winning their sixth European Cup in Madrid last summer.

They are also closing in on their first-ever Premier League title should the season be concluded.

The deal for Van Dijk got off on the wrong foot though, with Liverpool forced to issue an apology to Southampton in the summer of 2017 over alleged poaching.

Van Dijk flew up to Blackpool to meet with Klopp and seemed set on a move to Anfield before the move collapsed.

Liverpool were adamant they had ended their pursuit for the defender, but six months later they returned with an offer that blew Southampton out of the water.

Van Dijk had made it clear over the festive period that he wanted a January move with both Liverpool and Manchester City interested.

City weren’t prepared to pay £75m though and instead opted for Aymeric Laporte.

At first there was some apprehension over the mammoth fee, but Van Dijk has somehow made that sum look cheap.

Neil Warnock recently claimed that Man City should pay £200m to sign the Liverpool colossus.

“I look at what they’ve done, if they’ve got [Joe] Gomez alongside Van Dijk, they’ll be okay, they’ll start winning again because Gomez makes such a difference with his pace,” Warnock said.

“It’s like Man City, I still think Man City are the best. If they got a Van Dijk, I wouldn’t sign anyone else. I’d spend £200million on Van Dijk.

“If they had a Van Dijk in their team, they’d be 10 points in front. I don’t think there’s that much wrong with Man City other than a centre-half like that.”
