Early Life

Shakuntala Devi was born in Bengaluru in 1923. Her father worked
in a circus and would teach her magic tricks. One day he was stunned to see her
memory power and was so impressed that he left the circus and started his
street show to display his daughter’s talent to everyone.

Remarkable Memory At Age of Six

At the age of just 6, when most children start going to school, she already performed at the University of Mysore and astonished the onlookers.

Her Ability Was A topic Of Study In Foreign

With her talent and ability, she became so famous that in 1988, she was called over to New York by Arthur Jensen, the professor of psychology of California University, Berkley, to study her superhuman ability.

She Could Calculate Huge Numbers

The professor, in an interview, said that she calculated the cube root of 61,629,875 and the seventh root of 170,859,375 within a fraction of seconds, even before he could write it.

Guinness Book Of World Records

She was no ordinary human, her mathematical skills and memory
power was so excellent that she became part of Guinness Book of World Records.

In 1998, people of Imperial College, London, picked random 13 digit numbers and asked her to calculate.  The numbers were 7,686,369,774,870 × 2,465,099,745,77  and she gave the correct answer – 18,947,668,177,995,426,462,773,730 in just 28 seconds! This particular event is mentioned in the Guinness Book of World Records. (I am sure you didn’t even read the answer!). She was also named “Human-Computer”.

A Talented Author

Apart from being a mathematical genius, she was also a well-renowned author. She wrote her first book on homosexuality, which is called “The World of Homosexuals.”

Unfortunately, on April 21 in 2013, she suffered from a heart
attack and passed away at the age of 83 in her own home in Bangalore.

Movie Based On Her Life

Bollywood actress Vidya Balan will play her role in the Biopic along with Jisshu Sengupta, Sanya Malhotra, and Amit Sadh in pivotal roles. Anu Menon directs it and will release it on May 8, 2020.
