Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger could be about to return to club football, with Rennes reportedly targeting him to replace Olivier Letang as club president.

Rennes announced on Friday that Letang would be leaving the club, and according to reports Wenger is at the top of the shortlist for the job – which could also encompass the role of sporting director.

The ex-Gunners manager was recently named FIFA’s new technical director, but has said that if he was offered an opportunity to return to club football he would consider it.

Now Ligue 1 club Rennes are offering the 70-year-old that opportunity, according to French publication L’Equipe.

And ESPN claim sources have confirmed that Wenger is interested in the position.

Rennes are owned by the Pinaults, one of the richest families in the world who also own companies like Gucci and Yves St Laurent.

According to ESPN, the Pinaults believe they can convince Wenger to join Rennes in a role that would effectively give him total control of the club.

They are planning to contact Wenger this weekend, the report claims.

Rennes, who are currently fourth in Ligue 1, have not confirmed why Letang is leaving the club.
