Crag Wright, self-proclaimed Satoshi Nakamoto and chief scientist at NChain, has dropped a libel suit against Adam Back over the Blockstream director’s allegation that Wright was fraudulent by claiming to be the creator of Bitcoin (BTC).
Wright filed the complaint alongside similar lawsuits against Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, Bitcoin.com founder Roger Ver, podcaster Peter McCormack and Twitter user “Hodlnaut” a year ago.
On April 12, Adam Back tweeted that Craig Wright had left his libel suit. Back stated that Wright’s statement “refused to provide any explanation as to why Craig withdrew.”
Blockstream’s CEO also notes that Wright has agreed to refund any legal fees he has incurred – describing the move as odd given that “reasonable costs” are between 65% and 75% as the legal standard. In total, he estimates that the exercise cost Wright over $ 25,000.
After agreeing to dismiss the case, Back states that he received approximately $ 8,400 the next business day. Back adds:
On the plus side, I have to thank Craig for paying for a very informative over 2 hour briefing on the latest trends in libel law in the UK, and hilarious and detailed briefing on the case vs. @ PeterMcCormack from legal experts at RPC. (Who barely suppressed eagerness. “
In response to the statement, McCormack tweeted, “Me after that.”
In July 2019, the High Court of England and Wales dismissed the defamation suit against Roger Ver for lack of jurisdiction. Ver was summoned to the $ 125,000 lawsuit in May 2019, to which he quickly responded with a video message saying, “Craig Wright is a liar and a fraud, so sue me again.”
In January 2020, the United Kingdom The High Court also ruled that it had no jurisdiction over the lawsuit against Hodlonaut, and argued that the case should instead be brought in Norway.
Vitalik Buterin did not respond to Wright’s letter in April 2019 and there seems to have been no update on the matter since.
