City of Angels Traler Teases the Gothic Show’s Return

When Penny Dreadful was canceled after only three seasons, it was a blow for the hardcore fans of the beautiful monster drama. The story had an actual ending, yes, but it felt rushed and the characters left fans too soon. None of the show’s original cast is back for Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, but the spinoff does allow fans to return to creator John Logan’s epic world based on classic monsters and literature.  For anyone who missed out on the Penny Dreadful party, watch it, because it’s one of the greatest horror shows of the 21st Century.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Trailer

Logan has described the new series as a “spiritual descendant” — a much fancier and elegant way of saying “spinoff.” Like the previous iteration of Penny Dreadful, Logan is depicting and examining today’s horrors in the past. City of Angels is as much about the present as it is the past, according to the show’s star Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones). Dormer looks to be playing the big bad of City of Angels. Then again, even the worst of monsters on Penny Dreadful aren’t without humanity and nuance.

Trailer Reaction

The previous version of Penny Dreadful tackled issues and monsters plaguing the world today, but from the look of it, John Logan is speaking a little louder with City of Angels. He’s confronting the monsters and horror of today in the daylight of LA. The imagery in the trailer tells us exactly what’s on this new version of Penny Dreadful’s mind. The spinoff continues to look great, too. Logan, who has such an eloquent voice as a storyteller, knows how to tie commentary and entertainment together. As we’ve seen in no shortage of unsubtle, slow, or preachy and “important” dramas, that’s not a skill not every storyteller with something to say possesses.

Some Insider Info

Fans of Penny Dreadful should have their expectations raised at skyhigh right now. With John Logan’s beautiful mind still behind the series, there’s no reason to doubt it’ll keep the fun and dreadful drama coming. On top of that, here at Grit Daily we’ve heard nothing but effusive praise for Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. Recently, the show was filming in California, where we heard splendid buzz for the show. The sets and practical effects, in particular, are on another level for the series and will blow fans away. The sets are reportedly a lavish and believable recreation of Los Angeles in 1938. It’s a big production.

On top of the production design, the writing remains as crisp and sharp as ever. Everything we’ve heard about the show indicates another spectacular vision of Penny Dreadful is on the way from Logan. Apparently, Logan is a dream to work with and follow orders from. He’s got an ambitious vision for Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. From what we’ve heard, he’s pulled it off.

Official Synopsis

A spiritual descendant of the original Penny Dreadful story set in Victorian-era London, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels opens in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) and his partner Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane) become embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels premieres on April 26th.
