Barcelona ‘not worried’ by Ter Stegen interest as Chelsea line up Kepa replacement

Barcelona are reportedly unconcerned about the prospect of losing Marc-Andre ter Stegen to Chelsea in the summer transfer window and believe he will stay at the Nou Camp. The German stopper has been identified as a potential replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga but Barca are not worried about losing their No 1.

Express Sport understands that Chelsea are ready to sign Ter Stegen in the summer, if Arrizabalaga leaves Stamford Bridge.

The Spaniard lost his first-team place to Willy Caballero after a poor run of form earlier this season, although he was recalled for the FA Cup win over Liverpool and retained his starting berth against Everton at the weekend.

However, Real Madrid are weighing up a move for Arrizabalaga which opens the door for Frank Lampard to bring in a big-name replacement.

Chelsea have scouted Ajax ace Andre Onana and AC Milan star Gianluigi Donnarumma but have now been alerted to Ter Stegen, who is thought to be considering his future after falling out with Lionel Messi.

But Spanish publication Sport have countered this by saying Barcelona are “very calm” about Chelsea’s interest in their goalkeeper.

The report addresses Express Sport’s exclusive and claims Ter Stegen has “no intention” of leaving the Nou Camp at the end of the season while Barca are not worried by the reports.

Sport also rubbish the idea of the German holding a recent meeting with Juventus.

Ter Stegen is out of contract at the end of the 2021/22 season, although Barcelona are believed to be in talks over an extension until 2024.

Mundo Deportivo report that the 27-year-old wants to be paid a wage that reflects his standing as, in his eyes, the best goalkeeper in the world.

When asked about his contract status earlier this season, Ter Stegen said: “I have two more years left on my contract. I am very happy in Barcelona. I feel at home.

“My intention is to continue. We will have to see how everything evolves. There are conversations, but there is no hurry. I’m focused on the season.”

The player’s agent Gerd vom Bruch reportedly met with Barcelona Director of Football Eric Abidal last week to discuss a renewal.

Ter Stegen is looking to be paid a salary on par with Barca’s top earners, although it is unlikely any new offer would match Lionel Messi’s terms at the club.

The pair were said to have been involved in a training ground bust-up earlier this season as tensions boiled over following the sacking of Ernesto Valverde.

Reports from Spain initially revealed two named Barcelona players were involved, although these were subsequently claimed to be Ter Stegen and Messi.

Spanish outlet El Pais stated that the pair generally had a good relationship but discontent under the former boss spilled over during a session.

Messi was also involved in an angry exchange with Abidal after the Frenchman criticised the players for their role in Valverde’s dismissal.

Hitting back on Instagram, Messi said: “Sincerely, I don’t like to do these things but I think that people have to be responsible for their jobs and own their decisions.

“The players [are responsible] for what happens on the pitch and we are the first to admit when we haven’t been good.

“The heads of the sports department have to take their responsibilities too and above all own the decisions they make.”
