Arteta’s biggest problem at Arsenal when it comes to emulating Guardiola

Mikel Arteta’s biggest problem when it comes to emulating Pep Guardiola is that he doesn’t have the same quality of player at Arsenal.

That’s according to former Gunners star Emmanuel Petit, who says Arsenal are blessed with a good squad, but do not have the same “personalities” in their ranks.

Arteta has made a positive start in north London, with his Arsenal side showing more intensity when out of possession than Unai Emery’s.

But the Gunners have a lack of personalities in midfield, as Petit has pointed out, and Arteta needs players like Kevin de Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez if he is to truly emulate his mentor at Manchester City, Guardiola.

“You can see now that when Arsenal players don’t have the ball, they apply pressure and want to get the ball back very quickly,” Petit told Mirror Football.

“It’s just like Guardiola wants to do with his team – they want to control the game with the ball and show composure against opponents, especially at home.

“For me, the two main things Arteta wants to bring from Guardiola at Arsenal is applying pressure without the ball and to want to score goals.

“But I don’t believe he can do that with the quality of his players – especially in midfield.
