Arsenal are willing to meet Unai Nunez’s £26million (€30m) release clause this summer with a host of other clubs including Manchester City, West Ham and Bayern Munich also reportedly keen.
Centre-back Nunez has only featured in 12 La Liga matches for Athletic Bilbao this season with Yeray Alvarez preferred alongside Inigo Martinez.
And per Basque outlet Deia, Mikel Arteta has identified the 23-year-old as one of several players he wants to sign from La Liga.
The Spanish coach is also keen to bring in Valencia box-to-box ace Carlos Soler and defensive midfielder Marc Roca of Espanyol.
But as he looks to strengthen his defence, Arteta is keen on Bilbao academy graduate Nunez, who earned his first cap for Spain back in September.
Nunez is under contract at San Mames until 2023 and could be secured for £26m due to an exit clause in his deal.
But Bilbao have tabled a contract extension and are waiting on Nunez’s response.
Deia add that Manchester City, West Ham, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan are also keen on the Spaniard, however.
Arteta wants to bolster his back-line because he wants competition for David Luiz and Sokratis Papastathopoulos, who will be 33 and 32 by the time the next season begins.

But the 38-year-old is also eyeing up Soler and Roca, according to La Razon, who could cost £35m each.
Soler’s Valencia contract includes a £132m (€150m) release clause but he will nee allowed to leave for far cheaper than that, it is claimed.
That’s despite the 23-year-old remaining a key part of the side, having played 27 times this term, scoring three goals.
And with Roca’s Espanyol on the verge of relegation to the Segunda Division if the season resumes, the 23-year-old may be available for less than £35m.
But Arteta may well have to offload players in order to sign the trio with his funds expected to be limited once again unless the Gunners secure an unlikely Champions League berth.
Sokratis is among the players who has been tipped for a potential exit, while the north London club could be forced to sell Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The £50m-rated top scorer will be into the final year of his Arsenal contract at the end of the season.
Others who could depart the Emirates include Shkodran Mustafi, Sead Kolasinac, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Alexandre Lacazette.
